Courses
PEP 6301: Physiology of Exercise
This course is designed to educate and inform the student of the basic principles involved in human physiology at a level of detail that allows a fuller understanding of how each individual physiological system functions within the human body. The information presented on-line is divided into eight major classes, each dealing with specific physiological systems. Each Class is sub-divided into Elements that deal with specific sub-topic areas of particular importance. During the course of this class, the information presented in each on-line Class and accompanying reading assignment from the required text will be drawn upon to guide the student to a fuller understanding of the integrated physiological nature of the human body and how these systems response to acute or prolonged physical activity.
Evaluation in Health and Physical Education
A course designed to provide a sound theoretical understanding of the application of measurement and evaluation in educational and exercise science settings. The course content consists of s tatistical skills for data analysis, computer skills for data analysis, measurement theory (reliability and validity), and application and statistical skills and measurement theory to educational and exercise science settings.
PEP 6306: Gender and Cultural Issues in Physical Activity and Fitness
This class is a multidisciplinary integration of epidemiological, psychological, and cultural approaches to the study of physical activity and fitness levels among diverse ethnic groups and minorities in the United States. The focus of this class will be on examining the impact of gender and cultural beliefs on the physical activity and fitness levels of Hispanic, African American, and White adult and children populations and the development of interventions to promote PA and fitness in these populations.
PEP 6321: Sport in Contemporary Society
A course designed to acquaint graduate students with the pervasive impact that sport has on society. Students will execute a comprehensive analysis of various socio-cultural issues that interact with contemporary sport. Students enrolled in the course will gain a clearer understanding of the socio-cultural and historical significance of the "institution of sport."
PEP 6340: Principles of Motor Learning
Motor learning theory and application of how people learn and perform motor skills including sport skills, driving a car, writing your name, playing a musical instrument, etc. Physiology of Exercise
This course is designed to educate and inform the student of the basic principles involved in human physiology at a level of detail that allows a fuller understanding of how each individual physiological system functions within the human body. During the course of this class, the information presented in each on-line Class and accompanying reading assignment from the required text will be drawn upon to guide the student to a fuller understanding of the integrated physiological nature of the human body.
PEP 6397: Introduction to Neuroscience
In the spirit of the College of Education's conceptual framework this course exposes the students to the collaborative efforts of teachers, medical doctors, research scientists, industry leaders and government officials to gain a comprehensive understanding of the process of movement control and learning as they relate to the development of healthy lifestyles. This collaborative approach is reflected in the many techniques used to deliver course content and the varied assessments all designed to prepare the students to assume leading roles in society in the professional area of movement and physical fitness.
PEP 6397: Biomechanics
Biomechanics is a unique blend of biology and mechanics. It is the application and use of engineering principles to answer questions about how humans and animals move in our world. Biomechanical questions can range from the identifying the stiffness of the
turkey’s tendon while sprinting to the muscle volume necessary to support the large mass
of tyrannosaurus rex during locomotion. In this course you will acquire the necessary
skills to analyze the mechanical function of the musculoskeletal system and answer many
of the questions you have about human movement. These skills will be based on simple
engineering principles that are based on Newtonian mechanics.
PEP 7303: Urban Fitness Programming, Development and Implementation
In the spirit of the College of Education's conceptual framework, this course exposes the students to the collaborative efforts of teachers, health educators, research scientists, fitness industry leaders, and government officials to gain a comprehensive understanding of the development, implementation, and evaluation of physical activity/fitness programs. This collaborative approach is reflected in the many techniques used to deliver course content and the varied assessments all designed to prepare the students to assume leading roles in society in the professional area of physical fitness.
PEP 7309: Sport Finance
This course will provide participants with an opportunity to apply funding strategies and techniques for resource acquisition for facility financing and the financial management skills necessary for the successful operation of sports, health, and fitness programs. Participants will develop sound reasoning skills to enable them to resolve issues and provide the leadership necessary to establish collaborative relationship with internal and external entities that impact their organization.
PEP 7311: Analysis of Teaching Physical Education
Overview of current research on teaching physical education and utilization of descriptive-analytic techniques employed in physical education for supervision, research, and self-evaluation of teaching.
PEP 7312: Physical Activity Across the Lifespan
An introduction to“Physical Activity Across the Lifespan”. Students will cover the overall influence of physical activity on health at three specific stages of life: childhood, adulthood, and elderly. Topics within each section of the course will include the role of physical activity on health, the descriptive epidemiology of physical activity, and the theoretical framework of understanding and promoting physical activity. Topics will also be discussed in terms of differences between males and females and students will develop critical thinking skills about current topics on physical activity during these periods of the lifespan.
