General Information - Onsite Track Dietetic Internship Only (Standalone Option)

The University of Houston Dietetic Internship program is an ACEND (Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, 120 South Riverside Plaza Ste 2190, Chicago IL 60606-6995, Ph: 1-800-877-1600 ext 5400) accredited, post-baccalaureate supervised practice program that qualifies graduates to take the examination to become Registered Dietitians. Interns enter the full-time program (average 40 hours/week for 27 weeks) in January or June of each year. The program goals reflect the major points of our philosophy: quality instruction and broad-based site training which enables graduates to land meaningful professional employment in a variety of areas upon completion. The internship is administratively housed within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Health and Human Performance.

Our fast-paced program is made up of over 1000 hours of supervised practice and a program orientation. Orientation consists of a series of online modules and group assignments completed ahead of orientation that are presented during orientation week along with value program information that will promote success during supervised practice rotations. Rotations may be completed in varying order and consist of ten weeks of clinical, four weeks of management, and twelve weeks of community in locations in and around the Houston and Texas Medical Center area. These rotations, along with the assignments, projects, and internship meetings allow interns to develop advanced knowledge and skills in the field of nutrition and dietetics. Graduates of the program must meet competencies outlined by ACEND (120 South Riverside Plaza Ste 2190, Chicago IL 60606-6995).

The program looks for candidates that are able to perform independently in a fast-paced environment. Work experience, or its equivalent, is preferred and does not need to be in the field of nutrition and dietetics. Academic work must be recent (MNT courses must be within five years of applying) and of high quality. The program gives preference to candidates with DPD professional GPA of 3.4 and higher, DPD science GPA of 2.8 and higher, and overall GPA of 3.0 and higher.

It is suggested that you read and print the section under checklist early in your application process to determine all the components of the application that you will need to consider prior to submission.

The UHDI may waive supervised practice hours for students who can provide documentation of significant work experiences that comprise the same types of learning experiences as required by the ACEND competencies in particular emphasis areas. Please see the Prior Assessed Learning page for more information.

The UHDI currently accepts up to 20 onsite interns per year, 10 in the Spring and 10 in the Fall.

Please see other sections of our website for additional information and if questions remain, please contact the Dietetic Internship Director, Claudia Scott at cwscott@uh.edu.
